Ayurveda is the hot new way to eat, feel and move well. Zoe Strimpel had to have a taste
Zoe Strimpel

MOST City folk would probably not include traditional Indian homeopathy in their daily list of considerations. Yet ayurveda – which comes from the Sanskrit words for “longevity” (ayus) and “related to knowledge” (veda) – is quietly playing an increasing role in the lives of health-seekers – urban and otherwise. Madonna, Jennifer Aniston and Cindy Crawford are among its most famous adherents – fans of yoga and a special diet based on body type. But with an increasing selection of beauty products, massage and diet plans that use ayurvedic wisdom, more and more people are jumping on board.

With that in mind, and with a feeling of stagnation in mind and body, I went along to meet Loretta Heywood (pictured), an Ayurvedic healer. Her speciality is massage but she has recently produced food detox packages designed around your “type”. These include “vata” (people with thin, long faces, dull skin and small lips and eyes and prone to worry. Short end of the stick, in other words); “pitta” (medium physique, sharp appetites, easily angered), and “kapha” (short, stout folk who have a tendency towards greed). Each one has different digestive, menstrual and temperamental profiles. The detox is the ultimate in bespoke: a food package designed in consideration of your most intimate sensitivities – kaphas may need more lentils or fruit than vatas, say. Followed alongside two massages and a colonic (offered as part of the detox), it can not fail to leave you feeling lighter and better.

But I was in the market for a massage – and a detox massage sounded just the thing. Loretta first decided I was mostly “pitta” with a dab of “kapha” – and thus gave me an invigorating deep tissue going-over designed to both calm by temperamental spirit and enliven my sluggish system. It was an hour and a half of vigorous bliss – and a total body workout for Loretta. At the end, she remarked that there had been something “bored” in my body – something understimulated, and she had tweaked her massage to correct this.

My toxins awakened after that pummelling, I was expecting to feel a bit out of it. You’re meant to go and sit in a park after an ayurvedic treatment but I had to return to a stressful situation at work. A park would have been nice but actually I found myself alert and calm when faced with challenges back at the office.

Round two: Loretta wanted to see me again to check up on my body composition, my vibe, and my general wellbeing. This time I had a massage that lasted near two hours and left no part of my body unattended to. Chest, stomach, legs, back, face, head, toes – all kneaded and kneaded as we sought to unleash toxins, invigorate digestion and create a shift in energy field. Again, Loretta had an uncanny sixth sense: she could feel my state of adrenaline, my alertness, my overactivity of mind. Rather than trying to soothe me, she went at me with athleticism, harnessing and strengthening my dispersed energies.

When I left I was walking on air, happy and clear-eyed, despite having been short of sleep the night before. Ayurveda is a simple idea – but ingenious. Work with your body, listen closely to it, and you’ll love longer. Amen to that. For more info on massages and detox, contact Loretta Heywood on 07973120331 or go to http://www.ayurvedawest11.com/.

“All disease begins when we forget our
true nature or spirit. Ayurveda shows us the
way to get back to who we are.”
Loretta Heywood

With life being so hectic it’s no wonder we lose focus and balance in our life and neglect what our mind, body and soul really needs.

I am a culprit of this and when I went to see Ayurveda Therapist, Loretta Heywood in Notting Hill three weeks ago my state of mind was somewhat busy with juggling work, kids and the usual daily commotion of life. I even said to Loretta that I find it so hard to relax usually and I apologized in advance if I appeared to not be relaxed throughout my treatment with her.

Loretta is a highly creative individual who found fame and success early on in life as a chart topping singer and model and over the past decade has diverted her highly creative wisdom and talents to healing and Ayurveda making her excellent in what she does.

She began by giving me a questionnaire including questions about myself, diet including a couple of slightly embarrassing ones about my bowel movements. This information was used to give Loretta an idea whether I was a Kapha, Vata or Pitta type.

It was actually quite interesting answering these questions as I found this quite therapeutic in itself, after all how often do we get to really think about ourselves and how we feel in our busy lifestyles.

Loretta recommended I have the combined massage therapy treatment which is a bespoke treatment Loretta has developed over the years.

Loretta Heyward giving an Ayurvedic MassageShe used a combination of using deep tissue techniques and heat packs to soften and release the tension in my muscles especially around my neck and shoulders where needed it most. Loretta worked intuitively from the heart and knew exactly where my problems were. The massage techniques moved blocked energy through marma points. It was an incredibly healing experience and although I told Loretta at the beginning that I couldn’t relax I fell into a deep relaxed state of relaxation.

The effects of this treatment was more than long lasting, I really believe it has changed my holistic self. Loretta is more than just a practitioner of Ayurveda, she seemed to have so much creative spirit and this certainly had a positive effect on me.

Three weeks on from having my massage with Loretta I have started to meditate and find time to relax. There was obviously an imbalance in my life which needed to become more balanced and in just one treatment with Loretta I felt so much better. I actually can’t get enough of wanting to relax now whereas before I was trapped in a state of being hectic. I still get everything I need to do done, except I also find the time to relax too. I must have had so much blocked energy which Loretta obviously worked towards my marma points. It’s hard to believe that my life has changed in just one treatment.

Loretta provides a range of massage therapies and healing for stress related problems, along with Ayurvedic Rejuvenation & Detox programs for health and well-being.

She offers two detox plans which are developed using Loretta’s timeless knowledge of Ayurvedic nutrition and lifestyle into program’s that are easy to follow and incorporate into your city lifestyle.

The 14 Day Detailed Personal Diet and Detox Plan is a detailed dietary plan which will re educate you on how and what to eat suited to your constitution to gently cleanse you of toxins, giving you more energy and insight into yourself and how your food and lifestyle habits effect you.

The Ayurvedic Detox Package Colon Cleanse “is based on panchakarma (a deep ayurvedic cleansing system) This involves a restricted diet for 10 days and cleansing procedures based on Ayurvedic principles. This is usually given after the pre detox 14 day plan if wanting to cleanse further and go much deeper into clearing long term toxins from the system known as Ama.

Body Balance

Kindred Spirit article 'Body Balance'Massage therapist Loretta Heywood gives Tania Ahsan a powerful Ayurvedic treatment at London day spa Beautyworkswest.

Your constitution, according to the principles of Ayurveda, is divided into three primary types called doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These doshas have implications for everything from your physical appearance to how you deal with stress. An imbalance of the doshas can cause a variety of health problems or just leave you feeling under par. An Ayurvedic massage is one of the ways in which you can bring your body back into a state of equilibrium.

When I arrive Loretta asks me to fill in a questionnaire designed to find out which dosha predominates in me and which one or two may be out of balance. It’s certainly bizarre to be answering questions on the appearance of your stools before a massage but the rather personal questions all give the practitioner the ability to identify your constitution. Loretta, who trained at the Ayurvedic College in Kannur, the European Institute of Vedic Studies, and at Ayurveda UK, explains that the questionnaire is just a pointer as sometimes the way we see ourselves is quite different to the truth: for example, I think I have quite small eyes but Loretta assures me that they’re not particularly small. A highly trained practitioner can see past the answers and see from the appearance of the client in front of them which of the statements ring true and which might be either undue self-criticism or wishful thinking.

She identifies me as predominantly a combination of Pitta and Kapha and believes that the doshas that are high at the time of my massage are Vata and Kapha. An imbalance of Vata can cause hyperactivity, restlessness, anxiety, fear and insomnia; physical symptoms can include bloating and dehydration – both of which I had suffered from in recent weeks. Disturbed Kapha can manifest in depression and trouble letting go; it can also cause weight gain, water retention and shortness of breath – again symptoms I could identify as being a problem prior to the massage.

Loretta chooses aromatic herbal oils for the massage, these are chosen on the basis of what each individual needs on that given day. The client is completely naked for this massage (with towels to preserve your modesty) as there are long, flowing movements that go down the body. In fact the movements are so seamless that at times it felt like there was more than one person doing the massage or that Loretta had impossibly long arms.

The massage is quite vigorous in places and I feel a lot of knots being released. It is particularly deep around the clavicle for me and it feels heavenly around the shoulders where I often hold a lot of tension. I end up falling asleep in places and I’m sure I must have been snoring a couple of times but Loretta is too discreet to mention it. Her hands are very warm in places and there are acupressure points she manipulates to great effect as I can definitely feel my body easing out of the stiff way I’ve been holding myself.

I leave feeling completely spaced out and sleep very well that night. For about two weeks afterwards my appetite changes and I find myself making healthier choices, my skin is not as dry as it usually is and I can cope with everyday stress much better. A harmonious treatment that definitely worked well for me.

Prakruti – what’s yours?

Prakruti is an individual’s unique constitution determined at the moment of conception. One’s prakruti is the specific combination of three basic types of energy or functional principles that are present in everybody and everything: vata, pitta and kapha. The proportion in which these energies express themselves in one’s physiology and personality is one’s prakrut.

VATA – a predominantly vata person is blessed with a quick clear mind, mental flexibility, intuition, creativity and enthusiasm. They have excellent imaginations and excel at coming up with new ideas. Physically vatas are slender, have prominent features and cool, dry skin.

PITTA – this type of personality is articulate, passionate, insightful, alert and intelligent. They love knowledge and have a great capacity for organization and leadership, leaning towards noble professions. They tend to have a medium athletic build, with warm oily skin.

KAPHA – kapha individuals are characterised by a strong, healthy, well-developed body with soft, cool, moist skin. They tend to be loving, compassionate, affectionate, tolerant and forgiving in nature. They are stable and faithful and move slowly and gracefully.
